What's at the IIS root in Exchange 2007?

When you perform a default installation of Exchange 2007 that includes the Client Access Server role, a number of entries are placed at the root of the Exchange server's default web site. Some of these entries are brand new to Exchange 2007 and all are pretty important. In this tip, I'll go over the function of each of these entries.

• Autodiscover--This is the virtual directory used by Exchange 2007’s AutoDiscover service to automatically configure the settings for Outlook 2007 clients and compatible mobile devices.
• EWS--The EWS (Exchange Web Services) virtual directory is used to access Exchange 2007’s web services components. Exchange Web Services replace many older protocols and are critical to the proper functioning of Exchange 2007/Outlook 2007. For example, Exchange 2007’s Availability service depends heavily on this IIS entry.
• Exadmin--Manages administration of public folders.
• Exchange--This legacy root points to Exchange mailboxes housed on Exchange 2000 or 2003 servers.
• Public--This legacy root points to public folders housed on Exchange 2000 or 2003 servers.
• Microsoft-Server-ActiveSync--This root handles synchronization with mobile clients.
• OAB--The OAB directory is Exchange 2007’s distribution point for the Offline Address Book.
• UnifiedMessaging--This directory is used for access to Exchange 2007’s Unified Messaging services.
